Gillespie Provisional

Here’s another in our series of the many different Illinois provisional sales tax tokens.

This is the provisional token from Gillespie, IL. It is listed in the M&D book as number “L41”, held the value of a quarter of a cent at the time, had a rarity rating of R3 at the time of the M&D book and is made of brass.

An interesting thing about this token is that it says “United States Money” on the rear.

    Monte,
I was hoping that you were going to jump in with a story about the phrase “United States Money”. It’s not too late, of course… have you got any interesting tid-bits of info for us?

This token has always been a favorite of mine for two reasons. First the “United States Money” line on the reverse. Imagine the Gillespie Merchants Association creating money not just for themselves but for the United States! And second I like the bead ring at the rim on both sides as a decoration. So many tokens were so very plain. The Gillespie Merchants Association did a little to dress up their token.
